Large commercial trucks like 18 wheelers, tankers, semi tractor trailers, big rigs, and other large box trucks are very powerful vehicles.  Not only are they powerful in hauling heavy cargo across the United States, but they are also very powerful in a motor vehicle accident.  Our New York City personal injury lawyer knows that spinal cord injuries from New York trucking accidents can be devastating and catastrophic.  Victims could suffer permanent and irreversible disability which does not respond to any treatment, surgery, or physical therapy.  Victims and their families may suffer a lifetime of financial consequences too, including around the clock nursing care, home or vehicle modifications, medication costs, medical treatment, and other high financial costs.

We know this firsthand at Cohen and Cohen Law Group, P.C.  Our Queens law firm has dedicated its practice to representing victims in some of the most serious and devastating types of New York trucking accidents.  We fight for the rights of victims who have suffered catastrophic back injuries and spinal cord injuries due to the negligence of another motorist, especially a truck driver or trucking company.  If you or a loved one have been seriously injured, or if a loved one was wrongfully killed due to the negligence of a truck driver, ask our New York City personal injury lawyer for a FREE consultation to help with your case.

Why New York Trucking Accidents Cause Spinal Cord Injuries

Your spinal cord is part of the central nervous system.  It is well-protected in thick bone known as vertebrae, insulating and cushioning connective tissue, and thick muscle.

Damage to the spinal cord in the neck region which could cause partial or complete paralysis (second photo). Also notice the anterior cervical fusion repair in the third photo to help stabilize the two vertebrae to prevent further damage to the spinal cord.

While the vertebrae are extremely strong and hard bone, they are not impenetrable.  Strong and powerful forces could fracture, compress, or otherwise destroy them which means the spinal cord could also suffer serious injury.

Such strong and powerful forces are common in 18 wheeler wrecks.  This is because an 18 wheeler may way as much as 80,000 lbs, whereas the average motor vehicle may only wear 3,000 lbs.  This means that a commercial truck will gather significantly more momentum at 25 MPH versus a passenger vehicle at the same speed or even higher.  Given this, even low speed trucking accidents are able to cause catastrophic spinal cord injuries.  But high speed collisions on I-95, the Bronx Expressway, the Cross Island, or any other fast-moving highways or interstates could be guaranteed to cause spinal cord injuries.

Common Spinal Cord Injuries in New York

There are many common spinal cord injuries in New York trucking accidents that our New York City personal injury lawyer may be able to handle for you.  The two most significant types of personal injuries are those causing paralysis.  This includes the following:

Paraplegia – this is damage to the spinal cord which is lower on the back.  The damage could be complete (totally severed) or partial (damaged but not completely severed).  A victim may have difficulty using his or her legs or feet.  In some instances, paraplegia could also affect the lower torso.  Victims who have a total severance will likely have no function or movement ability.  This is usually permanent and irreversible.

Disc herniation and damage causing a partial but almost total spinal cord injury (see red in slide).

Quadriplegia – this is damage higher up on the spinal cord usually in the neck or upper back.  This damage could also be complete or partial.  A victim with a complete injury could have quadriplegia affecting his or her entire body, meaning that he or she may not be able to move or sense anything from the neck down.  A victim with a partial spinal cord injury may have some sensation or movement, but may need extensive physical therapy and occupational therapy to be able to perform even basic household tasks.  This is a catastrophic type of personal injury accident.
