Understanding the Three Common Head Injuries in Queens Car Accidents

Head injuries have the potential to be some of the most debilitating, traumatic, and most impactful types of injuries a person could suffer in a New York motor vehicle accident.  There are many possible common types of head injuries in Queens car accidents which could occur.  However, the most common types of head injuries are traumatic brain injuries, facial nerve injuries, and disfigurement.  Of all types of head injuries, a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is usually the most severe.  Victims and their families should know these three common head injuries in Queens car accidents because they need to know when they may have rights to protect under New York law.

Here at COHEN & COHEN PERSONAL INJURY LAWYERS, P.C. , our experienced Queens car accident lawyers know that head injuries are some of the most catastrophic personal injuries that could be caused in a motor vehicle accident.  Victims may be entitled to compensation for pain and suffering, lost wages, lost future earnings, medical bills, future medical expenses, loss of consortium, property damage, medications, and other expenses related to the motor vehicle crash.  We have built our law firm around representing those who have been seriously injured due to the negligence of another person, business, or government entity or employee.  If you or a loved one were seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident, ask our personal injuries lawyers how we can help you today.

Three Common Head Injuries

There are three common injuries in Queens car accidents that victims should know about to protect their rights to compensation.  This includes the following:

1) Traumatic Brain Injuries or TBIs – this is the most severe type of head injuries because it affects how the brain functions.  TBIs are common caused by a direct impact to the head, but they can also be caused by the whiplash back-and-forth motion in a violent collision.  Some TBIs could be caused by penetrating injuries such as debris piercing through the skull.  All forms of TBIs are dangerous and could result in serious personal injuries that are debilitating and usually permanent.  Some of the most common types of TBIs include the following:

  • Concussions – damage to the brain due to the impact on the head.
  • Brain bleeds – damage to the brain which results in a bleed, which can be very serious because a brain bleed means the pressure inside of the skull is increasing rapidly and could cause future injury.
  • Coup-contrecoup injuries – this is damage to opposite sides of the brain usually due to the whiplash motion.  This occurs when the body is impacted from one side and the brain slides to the other side of the skull and strikes the inside of it causing injury.  The brain then whips backwards to the side of the impact and hits that side of the skull and suffers injury.  This is a very dangerous type of brain injury because there could be bleeding on both sides of the brain which increased intracranial pressure too high.
  • Diffuse axonal brain injuries – this is when brain tissue literally rips or tears due to the impact and force of a Queens car accident.
  • Penetrating brain injuries – this is when shrapnel or debris pierces through the skull and causes direct, physical damage to the brain.

2) Nerve Injuries – there are 12 cranial nerves around the head.  Most of these nerves are on the face or around the face.  Unlike other nerves in the body, the cranial nerves are closer to the surface of the skin because there is less tissue between the outside world and the nerve.  This means that facial nerves and cranial nerves are more susceptible to serious personal injury in a collision.  Damage to these nerves could result in disability such as being unable to move parts of the face or have a lack of sensation.  Other damage to the nerves could cause extreme pain, burning, and agony.

3) Disfigurement – severe facial disfigurement is common in motor vehicle accidents, especially trucking accidents.  The skin on the face is fragile and can easily be torn, ripped, or damaged.  Unlike scars to other parts of the body, scars to the face generally cannot be hidden.  This can cause emotional injuries such as anxiety, depression, and even result to self-harm.  Facial disfigurement can also cause extreme pain and suffering.  The facial nerves are near the surface of the skin and can easily be damaged or irritated.  Disfigurement can happen from the airbag opening up, the trauma of the collision, or a secondary hazard such as an explosion or fire after the initial impact.
