What You Need to Know about a SLAP Tear Shoulder Surgery After a Queens Auto Accident

There are many possible injuries which could be caused by a motor vehicle accident.  One of the more common injuries is a shoulder injury.  The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body.  It can easily be injured or damaged in a motor vehicle accident, especially a trucking wreck.  One of the more painful and debilitating shoulder injuries caused by a motor vehicle accident is a SLAP tear.  Victims who suffered a SLAP tear shoulder surgery after a Queens auto accident may be entitled to compensation for their personal injuries and lost time from work when the injuries are due to the reckless, careless, or negligent conduct of another motorist.

Under New York law, compensation may include pain and suffering, lost wages, lost future earnings, medical bills, physical therapy costs, and other damages.  Here at Cohen & Cohen, Law Group, P.C., our experienced Queens auto accident lawyers understand how painful and disabling a SLAP shoulder surgery could be.  We work hard with your treating physicians and sometimes retain other medical experts to establish your claim for damages to recover the compensation that you deserve.  We will not let a defendant’s insurance company minimize your claims and the compensation that you may be entitled to.

What is a SLAP Tear?

There are many different types of shoulder injuries which could be caused in a Queens auto accident or trucking accident.  One of the most painful and debilitating types of injuries is a SLAP tear which is an extensive injury to the labrum of the shoulder.

The labrum is what forms the “cup” which your humerus (upper arm bone) sits in and pivots around.  The acronym “SLAP” stands for Superior Labor Anterior to Posterior injury which refers to the area of damage which is completely torn from the front of back of the labrum.  This means that a SLAP tear is where “cup” which the labrum forms and the humerus sits in is torn at the top from the front to the back.

A scope shoulder surgery can go in and repair that damage to the labrum.  This is usually an incredibly painful surgery and recovery because the shoulder needs to be immobilized after the procedure.  Besides athletes like baseball players or quarterbacks, our Queens auto accident lawyers knows that SLAP tears commonly occur in motor vehicle accidents due to the extreme forces in an impact.

Repairing a SLAP Tear: What is a Scope or Arthroscopic Surgery?

Shoulder surgeries can be extremely painful and disabling.  One minimally invasive and more modern technique is known as an arthroscopic surgery.  Also known as a “scope,” an arthroscopic shoulder surgery make several small incisions around the shoulder joint instead of one large incision.  The smaller incisions are used to place the a camera, small tools, and sometimes to blow air into the surgical site to inflate the space to make it easier to see and maneuver.

Nearly all types of shoulder surgeries could start as a scope, with the exception of a shoulder replacement.  If the surgeon is having difficulty completely the surgery with a scope, sometimes due to the extensiveness of the injuries, a surgeon may have to open up the incisions larger to complete the surgery.  This generally occurs in shoulder surgeries where the victim is catastrophically injured.
