Man charged in fatal New York crash

On Behalf of | Apr 28, 2015 | Car Accidents

On April 16, New York authorities took a 25-year-old man into custody after he was accused of being involved in a car accident that left one person dead. According to the indictment, the man was charged with criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving and reckless endangerment, among other offenses. He posted $20,000 bail and was scheduled to appear back in court on April 28.

The accident occurred on May 25, 2014. The accused man was reportedly driving a 2002 motorcycle south on Sprain Brook Parkway when he collided with a 2001 Mazda. The impact reportedly caused the driver of the Mazda to lose control. It struck the guardrail before bouncing back into traffic where it collided with a 2013 BMW motorcycle.

Both of the motorcyclists were thrown from their bikes. Emergency personnel pronounced the rider of the BMW motorcycle, a 45-year-old New Jersey man, dead at the scene of the accident. The accused man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated for life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Mazda was treated for minor injuries at a hospital and was released the same day.

If a family loses a loved one in a motor vehicle accident that was caused by the negligence of another driver, they may potentially seek compensation for their loss by filing a wrongful death lawsuit in civil court. An attorney may help the family gather any evidence associated with the crash, including police investigation reports and the statements of witnesses, to support the claim of negligence. Damages that are sought often include funeral and burial expenses and other amounts permitted by statute.
